Transport solution by rail

Trains are the best way to efficiently move large groups of people. The Perth Stadium Station and an upgraded East Perth Station will move the majority of a 60,000 capacity crowd.

The Perth Stadium and Sports Precinct transport solution integrates train, bus and pedestrian options. It supports a cultural shift in the reliance on cars and will efficiently and safely move, within an hour of an event finishing, up to 50,000 people, or 83 per cent of a capacity crowd while reducing the impacts on nearby residential and environmental areas.

Moving people by train

Trains are the best way to efficiently move large groups of people.

Following a capacity crowd of 60,000 at Perth Stadium, it is expected that trains will move:

  • 28,000 people from the new Perth Stadium Station.
  • 7,500 people from an upgraded East Perth Station.

To accommodate these large groups, a number of changes will occur across the network.

Stadium Station

Belmont Park Station has closed and will be redeveloped to become Perth Stadium Station.

The special event station's size and design will accommodate the safe and rapid transfer of passengers, with six platforms, allowing one train to depart approximately every two minutes.

Perth Stadium Station will feature:

  • Three island platforms providing six platform faces.
  • Two station concourses, each one accessing either a northern or southern station forecourt collection area and offering sight lines to station platforms.
  • Lifts and stairs for access from concourses to all platforms and collection areas.
  • Covered station platforms, concourse and stairs.

The landscaped forecourt collection areas allow for easier crowd control and can support other community functions on non-event days. The southern forecourt will be accessed by a pedestrian underpass, under Victoria Park Drive.

East Perth Station upgrade

Approximately 7,500 people are expected to walk from Perth Stadium to East Perth Station to access the Midland and Fremantle lines. To cater for the increased crowd, works will take place at East Perth Station.

Network infrastructure upgrades

Though major rail work will take place around the future Perth Stadium Station, various enhancements to the rail network will take place between Perth Station and Beckenham Station. These include:

  • Signalling and communications upgrades
  • Track reconfiguration in and around Perth Station
  • Additional upgrades
